This paper is a slightly revised version of a keynote address given at the founding conference of the History of the Book in Canada which took place at the National Library of Canada, Ottawa, on May 25, 1997. Robert A. Gross is Forrest D. Murden Jr. Professor of History and American Studies at The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He recently stepped down as director of American Studies after ten years in office and presently holds the position of Fulbright Chair of American Studies at Odense University, Denmark, for 1998-1999. Dr. Gross is also chair of the American Antiquarian Society's Program for the History of the Book in American Culture.
